ZONDAG 27 SEPTEMBER DE MIDDAG VAN...
THIJS EBBE FOKKENS EN ARJEN BOERSTRA

Houten tandwielen, loden gewichten aan touwen en katrollen en een ronddraaiende tafel met stukken magnetisch steen, zijn onderdeel van het werk Mechaniek dat Arjen Boerstra in opdracht voor DordtYart maakte. Bezoekers staan vol bewondering naar deze installatie te kijken en vragen zich af wat het geheel in beweging zet.

Thijs Ebbe Fokkens bouwde aan Resistance Piece, een houten constructie met daar boven op een achthoekig vlak. Daarvoor is een loopbrug geplaatst die een blik biedt op dat bovenvlak, een stuk zanderig grond met groeven die naar elkaar toelopen in een zwart gat. De constructie eronder herbergt een ruimte, afgebakend door plastic folie. In deze coulissen zijn vage contouren te zien van iets wat een rommelige werkplaats lijkt.

Beide kunstenaars realiseerden installaties die poëtische modellen van de wereld verbeelden. Kunsthistoricus en -theoreticus Michael van Hoogenhuyze is gastspreker. Hoogenhuyze heeft de afgelopen jaren gewerkt aan het bundelen van zijn ervaringen in het kunstonderwijs, tot een theorie over de samenhang tussen kunst en wetenschap. Onlangs publiceerde hij zijn boek ‘Van Muzisch Spel naar Muzisch Denken’.

EINDPRESENTATIE ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE

Gabey Tjon a Tham (NL) en Hrvoje Hirsl (HR) sluiten hun residentieperiode
af met een presentatie op zondag 27 september om 16.00 uur.

Tjon a Tham onderzocht nieuwe mogelijkheden van mechanische systemen en software waarbij ze zich drie vragen stelde. Wat voor invloed heeft het daglicht op de installatie? Kan ik objecten in beweging brengen anders dan met motoren of computergestuurd? En tot slot, hoe kan toeval onderdeel zijn van een niet vooraf vastgestelde compositie? Oftewel, welke regels stel ik op waarbinnen het werk zich vrij kan bewegen? Tijdens de presentatie toont Tjon a Tham een aantal uitgewerkte resultaten die voortgekomen zijn uit haar onderzoek. Zij vertelt over materialen en onderwerpen die tijdens dit proces van belang zijn geweest.

Hirsl maakt voor DordtYart een geluidsinstallatie. Metalen pinnen tikken tegen de stalen kolommen en brengen zo de sfeer van de scheepsmotorenfabriek tot leven. Het ritme wordt bepaald door de veranderende aandelenmarkt van de tien grootste, internationale scheepvaartbedrijven wereldwijd. Op deze manier legt Hrvoje Hirsl de link met de voormalige functie van de Biesboschhal.

TOPFLOOR: video’s met het thema: humor en absurdisme

Uit de collectie van LIMA heeft DordtYart zes korte films geselecteerd die allen focussen op humor en absurdisme. De video’s zijn niet alleen om te lachen, maar zijn scherp, kritisch en inventief. De bezoekers worden blij verrast tijdens het kijken naar de video’s.  Naast de video’s  van Jeroen Offerman, Lernert en Sander, Pilvi Takala, Elodie Pong en Jan van Nuenen toont film- en videoregisseur en acteur Douwe Dijkstra Démontable.

Terwijl een man zijn koffie drinkt, woedt er oorlog op de keukentafel. De wereld staat in brand, helikopters rijten zijn krant aan flarden en een drone schiet op een bord broccoli. Deze film toont de absurde realiteit tussen ons dagelijks leven en het wereldnieuws.

Wooden cogs, lead weights on ropes, pulleys and a rotating table with magnetic stones are part of the work Mechanism that Arjen Boerstra made in commission for DordtYart. Often visitors stand in awe looking at this installation and wonder what brings the whole installation in motion.

Thijs Ebbe Fokkens built Resistance Piece, a large wooden structure showing an octagonal flat. In front of the work a footbridge is placed, which offers a look at the top surface; a piece of sandy ground with grooves that converge toward each other in a black hole. The structure underneath houses a space delimited by plastic film. In these scenes you can see faint outlines of what looks like a cluttered workshop.

Both artists made installations that depict poetic models of the world. Art historian and theorist Michael Hoogenhuyze is guest speaker. Hoogenhuyze has in recent years been working on bundling his experiences in art education, to come to a theory about the relationship between art and science. He recently published his book 'From Game to Expressive Thinking'.

FINAL PRESENTATION ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE

Gabey Tjon a Tham and Hrvoje Hirsl finish their residency
period with a presentation on Sunday, September 27th 4pm.

Tjon a Tham explored new possibilities of mechanical systems and software whereby they asked three questions. How does the daylight influence the installation? Can I bring objects in motion other than by motors or computerized? And finally, can coincidence be part of a pre-determined composition? In other words, what rules do I set at which the work can move freely? During the presentation Tjon a Tham shows a number of detailed results, which emerged from its research. She talks about materials and subjects that have been of importance during this process.

Hirsl made a sound system. Metal pins tapping the steel columns and thus bring the atmosphere of the marine plant alive. The evolving market of the ten largest international shipping companies worldwide determines the rhythm. In this way Hrvoje Hirsl establishes a link with the former function of the Biesboschhal.

TOPFLOOR: videos with the theme of humor and absurdity

From the collection of LIMA DordtYart has selected six short films that all focus on humor and absurdity. The videos are not only to laugh, but also sharp, critical and inventive. Visitors are pleasantly surprised while watching the videos. In addition to the videos of Jeroen Offerman, Lernert and Sander, Pilvi Takala, Elodie Pong and Jan van Nuenen film and video director Douwe Dijkstra shows his Démontable.

While a man drinks his coffee, a war is raging on the kitchen table. The world is on fire, helicopters rip his newspaper to shreds and a drone shoot a plate of broccoli. This film shows the absurd reality between our daily lives and the world.
