Entartete Kunst Lebt [Degenerate Art Lives], 2010

5 min

The German painter Otto Dix was considered a degenerate artist by the Nazis. He was dismissed as a teacher and his painting of crippled war veterans Kriegskrüppel (1920) was exhibited at the exhibition of Entartete Kunst in Munich 1937. It was probably burnt afterwards but it is still known from a photograph of the Berlin Dada Fair in 1920 and from an dry point Dix based on it. Bartana brought not only the painting but also the veterans to life again.
